Original Translation - Nederlands
We gathered at Orchid Pavilion in late spring. The mountains were high, the forest was green, and a clear stream flowed beside us. We sat along the water, drinking and writing poems. It was a joyful day.
Looking at the wide sky and the many living things around us, I felt free and happy.
But life is short. Some people share their thoughts indoors; others enjoy nature outside. Yet happiness doesn’t last forever. Things change, and what we love becomes a memory. Life and death are part of nature—this makes me sad.
I know that pretending life and death are the same is wrong. People in the future will look back at us, just as we look back at the past. So I write down our names and poems. Maybe readers in the future will feel what we felt.

Why Is It So Famous in China ?
Beautiful Calligraphy
Wang Xizhi is hailed as the "Sage of Calligraphy" in China. His calligraphy, known as "Lanting Xu," is beautiful and flowing, considered the most beautiful running script in Chinese history.
Profound Reflection
This essay explores joy, friendship, nature, and the passage of time. It is both delightful and thought-provoking—a fusion of emotions that resonates with many.
Cultural Symbolism
In Taoism and Buddhism, the Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion is often quoted to reflect on views of nature, the search for life and death, and spiritual liberation.
This article also has great philosophical significance in China because it is both keenly aware of the brevity and limitations of life, and refuses to numb itself with illusory philosophical rhetoric; it acknowledges that pain is the shadow of happiness, yet still cherishes the fleeting beauty of life.
Historical Treasure
Emperor Taizong of Tang, Li Shimin, was the most famous enthusiast of the "Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion".
In his later years, Emperor Taizong of Tang (Li Shimin) cherished the original copy of the "Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion" so much that he even left a will requesting that it be buried with him in the Zhaoling Mausoleum. As a result, the original copy remains missing to this day.
Although the original is lost, a Tang Dynasty copy (over 1300 years ago) helps us preserve its beauty.
