Qi Baishi's Biography
Qi Baishi (January 1, 1864 – September 16, 1957), born in Xiangtan, Hunan Province, was a master of modern Chinese painting, a world-renowned cultural figure, and served as honorary professor of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and chairman of the China Artists Association, among other positions.

He worked as a carpenter in his early years, later making a living by selling paintings. He settled in Beijing after the age of fifty-seven. In 1955, he received the International Peace Prize from the World Peace Council, becoming the only Chinese to receive this honor. He passed away on September 16, 1957, at Beijing Hospital.
Qi Baishi excelled at painting flowers, birds, insects, fish, landscapes, and figures. His brushwork was vigorous and fluid, his colors were rich and bright, his forms were simple and vivid, and his artistic conception was simple and unpretentious. His representative works include "The Sound of Frogs Ten Miles Away from the Mountain Spring", "Ink Shrimp", and "Cattle Herding". He also authored "Baishi Poetry Collection" and "The Autobiography of Qi Baishi".

🎨 Artistic Style and Achievements
Qi Baishi advocated that art's beauty lies "between resemblance and non-resemblance." His works possess both the charm of literati painting and a rich folk flavor, truly achieving a balance between elegance and popular appeal.
Versatile Painting Subjects: He excelled at painting flowers, birds, insects, fish, landscapes, and figures, but was most famous for his shrimp, crabs, and flower-and-bird paintings. His ink shrimp, translucent and lifelike, are his most iconic artistic symbol.

Pioneering the "Red Flowers, Ink Leaves" Style: After his "late-life transformation," he pioneered the "Red Flowers, Ink Leaves" school, using vibrant red to depict flowers, paired with bold, ink-washed branches and leaves. The colors are rich and bright, the brushstrokes powerful and fluid, forming a highly distinctive personal style.
Master of Poetry, Calligraphy, Painting, and Seal Carving: His calligraphy and seal carving also formed a unique style, simple and genuine, complementing his paintings perfectly, truly achieving a perfect integration of poetry, calligraphy, painting, and seal carving.

🖼️ Representative Works
Qi Baishi was a diligent artist throughout his life, creating tens of thousands of works, many of which have become classics in the history of Chinese art.

Ink Shrimp: This work best represents his masterful brushwork skills. Without depicting water, it evokes the feeling of shrimp swimming freely.

The Sound of Frogs Ten Miles Away from the Mountain Spring: This masterpiece, a collaboration with the writer Lao She, uses tadpoles swimming in a mountain spring to represent the sound of frogs. A brilliant concept, it is a model of combining literary imagery with pictorial representation.

Twelve Landscape Screens: His magnum opus of landscape painting, grand in scale yet full of life's charm. It fetched a record-breaking 931.5 million RMB at auction in 2017, making it the most expensive Chinese artwork to date.
