Chinese Couplets: A Guide to This Ancient Art
Share
Chinese couplets, also known as "Duizi" or "Spring Festival couplets," are a unique form of poetry and decoration in China. They are usually written on red paper and hung on doorframes. They are not just decorations – they carry wishes, culture, and history.

History of Chinese Couplets
Couplets date back to ancient times. People believed that peachwood could protect them from bad spirits. During the Spring Festival, they would hang peachwood charms with the names or images of two gods,Shen ShuandYu Lei, on their doors.
Later, instead of drawing gods, people started writing good wishes on the peachwood. This was the beginning of what we now call “couplets.”

During the Tang and Song dynasties, couplets became more artistic and were used not only for protection but also for celebrations like weddings, festivals, and even funerals.
By the Ming and Qing dynasties, couplets were very popular. Almost every family would put them up during Chinese New Year. Scholars also enjoyed writing and sharing couplets as a way to express their thoughts and feelings.

Types of Couplets
There are different kinds of couplets for different occasions:
- Spring Festival Couplets– For Chinese New Year, to welcome good luck and happiness.
- Birthday Couplets– To wish someone a long and healthy life.
- Wedding Couplets– To bless a newly married couple with love and harmony.
- Business Couplets– Used in shops or companies to bring success and wealth.
- Educational Couplets– Hung in schools or study rooms to encourage learning.
- Memorial Couplets– Written in memory of someone who has passed away.
- Decorative Couplets– Found in gardens, temples, or famous places to add beauty and meaning.

How to Hang Couplets Correctly
Hanging couplets follows traditional rules:
1. Right and Left Sides
The first line (上联, shànglián) goes on theright sideof the door.
The second line (下联, xiàlián) goes on theleft side.
This is because ancient Chinese was written from right to left.
2. The Top Banner
Above the couplets, there is usually a short horizontal banner called横批 (héngpī).
It is often a four-word phrase that summarizes the theme of the couplets.
3. Match the Occasion
Always choose the right type of couplets for the event.
For example, Spring Festival couplets should be happy and bright, while memorial couplets should be respectful and calm.

Examples of Common Couplets
Here are some well-known couplets you might see in China:
1. Single-Character Couplet
“福” (Fú)– Meaning “good fortune.”
It is often hung upside down because in Chinese, “upside down” (倒, dào) sounds like “arrive” (到, dào). So, an upside-down 福 means “good fortune has arrived.”

4. Patriotic Couplet
