This work, titled *Painting of the Penglai Fairyland*, is a copy of the masterpiece of the same name by the Qing Dynasty painter Yuan Yao; the original is currently housed in the Palace Museum in Beijing.
Utilizing the *qinglü* (blue-green landscape) technique, the painting depicts a fantastical scene of pavilions nestled amidst immortal mountains and surging seas of clouds. The mountains rise in dramatic, rugged formations, and the architecture is magnificent; the composition exudes a grand, majestic aura, evoking a surreal, otherworldly atmosphere.
The architectural complex is built into the mountainside, featuring golden roofs and red walls arranged in a staggered, layered fashion; this creates a dynamic visual interplay between the structures and the surrounding landscape—contrasting the stillness of the buildings with the rugged pines, grotesque rock formations, and swirling mists. The mountains are rendered primarily using the "ghost-face texture stroke" (*guimian cun*) technique, characterized by striking, varied lines and rich layering that accentuate the three-dimensionality and sense of movement of the rock faces.
