- Nanhai Guanyin is called Guanyin Bodhisattva in Buddhism. She is a symbol of great compassion and is known as the "Three Holy Ones of the West" together with Amitabha Buddha and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva. She is usually portrayed as a woman holding a pure bottle and a willow branch, symbolizing purity and compassion. According to the Buddhist classic "Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Universal Door", Guanyin Bodhisattva has 32 adaptive bodies and can manifest different forms according to the needs of sentient beings.
- The belief in Nanhai Guanyin is widely spread among the Chinese people, especially in the southern coastal areas, such as Nanshan Temple in Hainan Island and Putuo Mountain in Zhejiang, where there are famous Guanyin temples. This belief reflects the cultural integration of Buddhism and Taoism.
