Some of Van Gogh's Most Famous Paintings

Sunflowers1888s

This is one of Van Gogh's most celebrated works. He employed vibrant colors and bold brushstrokes to capture the vibrant vitality of the sunflowers. The predominantly yellow hue, set against a simple, bright background, symbolizes passion, hope, and perseverance, making it a quintessential Post-Impressionist work.

There are several versions of this work, one of which is housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and another, "Still Life: Vase with 14 Sunflowers," in the National Gallery in London.

The Starry Night1889s

Created in 1889 while Van Gogh was in a mental hospital in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, this painting depicts a starry sky brimming with movement and change, rendered in swirling, swirling brushstrokes. The entire scene is engulfed in a turbulent, turbulent torrent of blue-green. This detached scene reflects Van Gogh's turbulent emotions and his frenzied, hallucinatory world.

Wheat Field with Crows1890s

Van Gogh depicts a scene of oppression and unease, set against a backdrop of golden wheat fields and soaring crows. The crows, like messengers of death, circling the wheat fields, add a touch of mystery and terror to the painting.

This painting not only captures Van Gogh's inner struggle and pain in the final stages of his life, but also, through the symbolism of death and despair, the wheat fields with crows flying around, expresses his profound reflections and insights on life and mortality.

Now in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Self-Portrait1889s

Van Gogh created numerous self-portraits that showcase his facial features and personality. Using delicate lines and soft colors, he deeply conveyed his inner world, revealing his inner pain and loneliness while also showcasing his artistic talent and creativity. Among them, "Self-Portrait after Cutting Off the Ear" and "Self-Portrait Without a Beard" are among the most famous.

The Night Café1888s

This painting depicts a café in the French town of Arles. Van Gogh uses bright colors and bold brushstrokes to depict the café's bustle and joy, using elements like a green ceiling, blood-red walls, and jarring green furniture. The yellow café seats contrast sharply with the blue starry sky, creating a striking visual impact. This painting embodies Van Gogh's romantic style.

Irises1889s

This masterpiece was created by Van Gogh during his stay at the Saint-Rémy asylum. The irises in the painting are vibrant and beautiful, set against a rich yellow background. The harmonious blue and green accents neutralize the frenzy of the yellow, creating a less intense, more peaceful and comfortable experience than "Sunflowers." This is a masterpiece of Van Gogh's floral themes from his later years.

It is now in the collection of the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

The portrait is vividly portrayed. Two versions exist: one in a private collection and the other in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

In 1990, one of the two, "Portrait of Dr. Gachet," sold at Christie's in New York for a staggering $82.5 million, setting a world record for the highest price paid for a work of art at auction at the time.
